The 52-year-old made nine changes to the side that beat Sheffield United on January 2nd, with only Joe Gomez and James Milner keeping their places in the team from that clash against the Blades. However, that didn’t seem to have too much of an impact on the Reds, and they ended up prevailing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Curtis Jones.

Pedro Chirivella was one of those to start the match. Despite him being 22 years of age, this was just the ninth appearance of his Liverpool career. However, it now appears that the Anfield outfit are prepared to offer him a new contract extension, with his current deal set to run out at the end of the current campaign.

This has got the club’s supporters talking, and some appear to back the idea of him prolonging his stay at the club.

There were certainly positive signs in his display against the Toffees in the F.A Cup. After the match, some supporters were even comparing him to former star Xabi Alonso. High praise indeed.

Others, though, are far from convinced that he should stay at the club.

Having played less than 10 times for the club, the former Spain U17 international is unlikely to feature on a regular basis even if he does stay with the side, especially with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Fabinho ahead of him in the pecking order. At his age, he really does need regular football.

One or two fans have looked at it from a more cynical point of view, suggesting that the club will only give him the extension to secure a future transfer fee.

With such a strong focus on finances in today’s footballing world, it would make sense for the Reds to make sure that he does not leave for nothing. Liverpool have sold fringe players for big fees in the past, with two moving directly to the Cherries as alluded to by that last fan – Jordon Ibe and Dominic Solanke made the switch to Dean Court for £15m and £17m respectively.
